OPENING CEREMONY. Press Association. MASTERTON, MARCH 9. The 'Fire Brigades’ Conference was opened by the Mayor. Mr Hogg, member for the district also spoke. He said he would like to see brigades placed on a, better footiTig, and formed into an efficient department under"" Government supervision. I t was decided to revise all rules. The Queens- , town Brigade was suspended- for not replying to a demand for an opology for the unseemly conduct of members at the Christchurch conference last year. Fire Police and Salvage corps were included in the association, the rules being altered for the purpose. Other alterations enabled a brigade to appoint members other than brigade members to represent it, and allowed reprsenetation by bgylproxy. Later. The Fire Brigade Conference decided to vote £27 as a prize fund for essays oh subjects connected with fire service in the Dominion! The executive are to choose three subjects, an_d the prizes in each subject will be £5, £3, and £l. A sub-committee, consisting of the president. Captains Mitchell, Wynn, Jenkins, Holland, Secretary Robbins, and Supt. Smith, was appointed to deal with applications for longservice medals.
