TIIE INQUIRY PROCEEDING. Press Association. CHRISTCHURCH, .March 3. The Te Oraijga Home inquiry was continued to-day, when tlm witness v, ho had concluded her evidence-in-chief yesterday was tendered for crossexamination. She said her complaints generally were not against tlm matron, hut against the way they had to slog into work. She wanted to do housework instead of wood-chopping. She did not know of the plot among the girls to abscond ill the winter of last- year. The food was short, hut she never made any complaint. Sim had been punished for threatening to kiH a girl, and she did not get on well with all the members of the stall', as they were too fond of growling at her. Punishment was inflicted with the broad side of the strip, and the girl lay on a bed and was punished through her nightgown. The matron liacl boxed her ears, and that caused a buzzing in her ears, but she was not exactly deaf. Another witness, the girl whose li iir had been cut for escaping, said she did not ask other girls to go to a house of ill-fame. Tlie matron thumped her down the passage when .slit* was brought back, and put her into a cell. She had three meals a day oil dry bread and water, and 10 strokes with the strap. She had heard tho matron make remarks about tlm girls. iSlie called one of the girls an infuriated animal, and 'another a vulgar brawler. The stall were very snappy to the girls, and not always very nice to them.
