In tho House of Commons Air. H Y. Sanger’s Bill, providing for the enfranchisement of women, which is identical with the Bill introduced by Air. AY'. H. Dickinson some time ago, was read a second time by 271 to 92. Air. Gladstone, without committing the Government, personally supported tlie measure.
The majority included Sir Edward Grey, Messrs Morley, Haldane, Burns, Lioyd-Georgo, Gladstone, Buxton, R. It. Cherry, AV. Runcinian, and the minority included AH. Asquith, Sir AV. S. Robson, Messrs S. T. Evans, Lewis lTarcourt, and John Sinclair. Tlie Bill was remitted to ia committee of tlie whole house. This is considered as being equivalent to shelving it. The suffragists have resolved to agitate and urge the bringing m of a Government Bill to ensure its passage. The Times, commenting on the Bid, says that when people talk about women’s successful exercise of the franchise in some Australian and American States and in Finland, they seem to forget that the problems of government there approximate far mOre to municipal questions than, those Britain deals with. The suffragist leaders have not yet demonstrated that au.v considerable number oi women agree with them. _____
