GOVERNOR'S ROAR'D MEETING
The’ annul and ordinary mooting of the JLigli School Hoard of Governor’s was held yesterday afternoon, when there wore present: Mr C. A. DeLautour (in tlio chair) and Messrs A. Fordo Mathews, W. Morgan, Jolm Coleman, and R. Johnston. Appointments to the Board were notified as follows: Mr John Coleman (County Council), Mr J. W. Nolan (Borough Council), and Mr C. A. DeLautour (lor the Education Department). \ The first business was the election of the chairman, and Mr It. Johnston proposed that Mr. DeLautour accept the position. This was seconded by Mr Mathews and carried. Both mover and seconder eulogised the work done by the chairman. Mr W. Morgan was re-appiontod secretary and Ir. a.surer. “Mr Morgan’s zeal is unhounded,” remarked tlio Chairman. The report, which was adopted, showed that there were now 59 pupils attending the secondary classes, and also showed a satisfactory advance in the classes for-woo’dwbl’k, dressmaking, and cookery. The governors wore anxious to arrange for classes of agricultural and dairying instruction. Representations had been made to the Department, asking that the regulations he altered to allow of the interchange of teachers between Gisborne and Napier, dt was suggested to the Hon. Mr. Fowlds that the woodwork hours lie reduced to enable the requisite lime to be given to tlio subjects desired. The Minister had replied that the matter would he considered. The report was adopted. The sum to be paid to the Education Board for the year for the cost of secondary classes amounted to £lls 2s 9d. In regard to the appointment of a Director of Technical Education for this education district, Mr. Morgan stated that the proposal had fallen through owing to some of the southern wards of the district being short of funds. The matter of providing additional desks in the High School came up, and it was decided to procure them. On the. motion of Mr. Matthews, the question of procuring a microscope was left in the hands of the chairman and secretary. The question of aided pupils arose, and considerable satisfaction was oxprosssod at the notable progress made by these pupils. Norali Harper’s grant of £2O was extended for another year. The case of .tlio lad Dunphv, aged IG, was also discussed. He made an application for monetary assistance for electrical engineering. The chairman said that.the lad had done excellent work, quite justifying what the Board had done for him, and ho was a credit to Gisborne. He wished to go to the Canterbury College, and he could do so on lus matriculating. It was decided to further aid him If lie fulfilled all conditions and attempted the National Scholarship. Tlio aid would depend on the results attained. An application for assistance was received from a pupil up the coast, but it appeared that he bad only passed the sixth standard, and nothing was stated about necessitous circumstances. The chairman and secretary had forwarded a reply stating that the prospect was unfavorable, but they would bring the matter before the Board. Lt was decided to decline the application, as the qualifications were insufficient. Funds would not permit of assistance being given to those who had only passed the sixth standard. Miss (low forwarded her resignation. It was decided to appoint a lady at £l5O per annum. A letter was received from Air. J. Kinder, pointing-out that there was a debit of £9 lls 6d on the school magazine, and asking (hat permission lie given to use the school for lee-' tures. A sum of £5 5s was granted for the magazine, and the required permission was given, Mr. Morgan stated that Air. G. 1 . Davies had forwarded an ancient horse pistol found at N.gatapa, and some coral and other articles. It was decided to thank Mr. Davies for the gifts. Mr. Morgan referred to the plumbing classes recently .started. . and it was decided to claim a subsidy of twothirds of £2O.
