SATURDAY, FEBRUARY S. (Before Air AV. A. Barton, S.AI.) ALLEGED THEFT FROAI PERSON Minnie AlcNeii alias Wolf and Daisy Simmolliag wore charged with having,on PebruaryN/th at the,Park racecourse stolen from the person of damuel Charles Goldsmith, Paritu, a rolled gold watch valued at £6 and a bookmaker’s ticket entitling the holder to a payment of £9. Detective Aladdern conducted the prosecution and Air T. Alston Coleman represented accused. Detective Aladdern asked for a remand as his case was not ready. On iiis suggestion a short adjournment was taken to enable the evidence of the bookmaker to be taken, as he would be away in Auckland when the hearing took place. James Clegg, bookmaker, Auckland, gave evidence that lie was plying his calling at the Park Racecourse oil the previous day. Remembered doing business with Goldsmith. Laid him £6 to £3 on Clieddite, but could not remember in what race. Clieddite only won oil one occasion durin gthte day. Did not pa-- out ou Goldsmith’s ticket until about half a.n hour after the other debts on the race had been, paid. Two females came up with Goldsmith and one of them presented the ticket and received p iyment. Could not identify accused as Die females with Goldsmith. AVas quite sure the ticket presented was the one issued to Goldsmith because liis was the only bet of £6 to £3 on the winner. Had never seen accused before in Ins'lire. By Mr Coleman: Could remember Goldsmith’s bet because it was unusual for Ala or is to make bets for large sums. Goldsmith seemed quite satisfied when the female took payment. A remind was then granted till Februarv 17th. Bail was allowed—self in £2O and two. sureties ot £lO in each case. T „,.„ x .,v- wc , c! drunkenness. Four first offenders were dealt with in the usual manner and one was fined 10s with 2s costs.
