The Gisborne Racing Club’s summer meeting was commenced yesterday afternoon, when there was a largo attendance of the public, and especially of the fair sox. The weather was perfect racing weather, being neither dull nor too warm. The arrangements (in the capable hands of Mr. M. G. Nasmith, secretary) were all that could be desired, and everything went off without a hitch. Some novelty was provided by the presence of the bookmakers (about 20), and they did a great deal of business, diminishing the totalisator figures considerably. The "bookies” paid their £ls each, and the question arose ns to who should be inside and who should be out. This was settled decisively by the private detective employed by the club, and no argument was allowed. The provisions of the gaming laws were fully complied with, and everything went off successfully. The course was in excellent order, and some vory good racing was witnessed. Erin got the worst of an otherwise good start, and Tarina and Lady Roliina singled themselves out, and led the field bv a couple of lengths till about two furlongs from homo, where Chrysoprase, Pearl Reef, and Erin were running in fairly close order. Erin and Clirveopraso came with a iairlv good run and got within striking distance, bin Lady Rohina beat Tariua by the narrowest margin, Erin and Clirysopraso being a half and a quarter of a length away respectively. To Rau and O. S. and Co were to have met at. the Victoria. Domain yesterday, but as tho latter team failed to put in an appearance, To Rau claimed the match by default.

BOWLING, TURANGANUI CLUB

At the Turanganui Club’s green yesterday two further matches were played in the Bennott Cup and championship medal competition. Nasmith jun ran away at the start in his game with Neill, and on the 10th head was 12 to his opponent’s 3. but Neill drew up, and on tho 17th head was 13 to Nasmith’s 14. On the 19tli head Neill was 17 to Nasmith 15 Nasmith made a tie (17 all) on the 20th head, and drawing one on the last head, won by 18 to 17. In the other game Hallam ran away from Nasmith, and on the 7th head his score was 11—4. Nasmith drew up, however, and was 10 to 11 on the 10th ead. On the 16th head Hallam was 19—11, but on the last five heads Nasmith scored 9, and tho game ended, Hallam 23, Nasmith 20.

THE GISBORNE CLUB. There were a good number of bowlers at the Gisborne Club’s 'greens yesterday afternoon, and a number of enjoyable games were played. Two matches took place in the Handicap Pairs, Collins and AV. Pettie (skip) beating Preston (substitute) and Hennessy by 30 points to 17, and T. Clarkson and T. A. Crawford (skip) scratch, beat Collins and Pettio (skip), handicap 5 points, by 26 points to 17. In the former match Hennessy played a fine game, but Brownlee’s substitute was unable to give his skip any assistance, with the result as stated. In the other, Crawford’s superb drawing was tho feature of the match, and being well supported by his lead tho issue was not long in doubt. Pettie played well, a number of his drives being excellent, and Collins also was in good form, but the opposition was too solid. Other games played were:—Mackrell, Malcolm, Bullock, Coleman (skip) 30 v. H. Aliller. Wilson, B. Lewis, Witty (skip) 8; T Clarkson, Pavitt, Brady, Crawford (skip) 19 v. Fordyce, Morgan, Craig, Ponsford (skip) 17; Lewis, Burton, Kiioig, Robertson (skip) 27, Kyme, Crawford, Dallen, Eure (skip) 17.
