The rise is due mainly to cheaper money and partly to the news that a sum of £3,000,000 is to be early devoted to tho sinking fund. HIGH COMMISSIONER’S REPORT. AVELLINGTON, Feb. 3. The Department of Industries and Commerce has received 'the following cable from the High Commssioner, dated Loudon, February Ist: The mutton market is dull, there being only a hand-to-mouth demand. River Plate mutton is in large supply, -and is being strongly pushed for salo. The following aro the current quotations: Canterbury mutton Jljd per lb, North Island 3Jd, Australian 2J-d, River Plate 3d per lb. There is a- fair local demand for this season’s New Zealand lamb. Canterbury' brands are quoted at Gd per lb. The beef market is weak, and there is no change of .prices reported. Tho butter market is very firm and excited on account of the falling-off of receipt's. There are more buyers than sellers, ami there is general confidence in the maintenance. of the present nrices. Choicest New Zealand butter averaged 121 s per cwt during tho last week. The Tongariro’s butter, to bo delivered next- week, lias been sold at .126 s por cwt, and 128 s has been asked for. Australian butter is quoted at 1225. Frozen meat: New Zealaud mutton and l imb are unchanged. 'Bool, 180,2201 b.-s. f.a.op ;ox hinds o.'d. The hemp market is quiet. -January to March sliimnents £27 15s. Hides are neglected. Nominal prices: Queensland, heavy ox 4-Jd, light ox 4-1(1. cow 4Jd. Tallow: The stock is 14,800 casks, imports 8525, deliveries 4454 Leather is dull; first dressing hinds laid; basils |d cheaper; first Wellingtons 18-jd.
