BRITISH POLITICS.

THE INDIAN POLICY

HEREFORDSHIRE BYE-ELECTION

United Press Association—Copyright

(Received Feb. 2. 4.46 p.m.) LONDON, Feb. 1

In the House of Commons Dr. Rutherford moved that the present condition of India, demanded the Government’s serious attention, as their proposals were inadequate to allay the discontent, and comprehensive reforms were required. Air. Alorley ridiculed such a confident judgment after a six weeks’ tour in India. He suggested that the need for reforms was fallacious, and stated that India’s condition showed an enormous and extraordinary improvement since the present Government had entered office. The amendment was withdrawn. Tli newspapers commend Air. Alorley’s broad and sympathetic policy.

The vacancy created in South Herefordshire by tlie death of Colonel Alan Gardner has beta filled by the election of Captain P. Clive (Unionist) 4946, who defeated Mr. Thomson (Liberal) 3928. [Captain the Hon. P. Clive, the present member, was returned unopposed for the seat in 1900. but was defeated by the late Colonel Gardner at the last general election by a majority of 312.]
