EULOGIES AND PRESENTATIONS

Press Association. INVERCARGILL, Jan. 31. A gathering of about 50 reprcoeiitafcive citizens farewelled Mr McCarthy, S.M., to-day. Tho Mayor, with whom was associated Mr. j. Turnbull (senior J.P. and former magistrate), presided. Speakers referred to Mr. McCarthy’s desire to improve the social conditions of the city. Watson, chairman of the Harbor Board, said that all fair-minded people would admit that he had done his duty according to his conscience, and lmd done his best for the advancement of good living, and the suppression of. crime and disorder, and in losing Mr. McCarthy those who had these tilings, at heart, had lost a friend. A presentation of silverware, besides a gold bangle for Mrs. McCarthy, was made.
