THE NELSON FIRES.
FRUIT CROP AFFECTED. Press Association. NELSON, Jau. 28. Tho position with regard to tho bush fires remains much the- same. There is no appearance of rain, and the only favorable circumstance has been tho absenco of high winds. If a strong wind does arise, there is every probability of a vast and widespread disaster. Several homesteads in the Upper Motupiko ALU ley arc still threatened, and otliors have only been saved by the most strenuous efforts of bands of workers. One crippling effect of tho grass fires on the small settlers is that they have no feed left for their stock, and are selling sheep at less than half their value, with no alternative except to keep and starvo them. The continued drought is having a prejudicial effect on large fruit which are not filling as they should, while of those in the ripening stago largo quantities are falling off altogether. The outlook in the back districts is gloomy and disquieting. Many helpers.sustained slight burns, and there arc several cases of smoke blindness.
