WHO PAID FOR IT?
According to an English paper to hand, Mr. Alexander Laing, a liquor dealer of Ncweastle-on-Tyno, lias erected an art gallery and presented it to the public “to commemorate fifty years’ successful business life in that"city. YY’e would remind Air. Laing of three things:— I. Ho forgets that THE TRUE AND LEGITIMATE SUCCESS OF A BUSINESS DEPENDS UPON ANOTHER FACTOR THAN OF FINANCIAL GAIN—VIZ., WHAT IT HAS DONE FOR HIS CUSTOMERS. His business during the last half-cen-tury has enriched himself only at the' expense of the impoverishment of others, hence that business has boon •i dismal failure. And when, by-nnd-b.ve, God audits liis accounts, AH\ Laing will find himself worse than a hopeless bankrupt. 2 AIR. LAING HAS BEEN ABLE TO GTY T E THIS ART GALLERY TO THE PUBLIC ONLY BY RENDERING IT IMPOSSIBLE FOR A LARGE NUMBER OF TTIS - VIOTTAIS TO PURCHASE PICTURES FOR THEIR OYVN HOAIES. It would be plainly interesting to know the number of bouses that have been destitute of pictures because Air. Laing’s business has absorbed the only money that could have procured them. 3. This means that, after all, Air. Laing lias not given this art gallery to tlio city of Newcastle. The men the women, and children who have been deprived of the luxuries and necessaries of life in consequence of his business have paid for the picture gallerv so ostentatiously handed over to the city by its liquor magnate. The following would be an appropriate inscription for the foundation stone: “THIS ART GALLERY HAS BEEN ERECTED BY AIR. LAING, THE AVELL-KNOYVN LTOUOR DEALER, AT THE EXPENSE OF THE SLUM DYVELLERS AND OTHERS OF THIS CITY T . YVHO HAVE DENIED THEMSELVES THE COATFORTS AND HAPPINESS OF HOAfE LIFE DURING THE LAST FIFTY YEARS IN ORDER TO HAND 0Y 7 ER. TO AIR. LAING THE NECESSARY SUAI FOR THIS INSTITUTION.” Advt. , CI.P.
