Porter, Returning Officer, advised that the poll on a proposal that the wc-ckly half-holiday shall be allowed in tho borough on tho same day as the day appointed as the closing day for shops was not ca rri ed. —Received. Mr. John T. Ford, for tho Acting Chief Engineer of Railways, forwarded the Council’s deed of grant of right to lay watermain under tho railway line at Makaraka. finally executed.—Received. Tho County Engineer, Sir.- De G. Fraser, wrote on behalf of the County Council, thanking the Borough Council for allowing connections to be made with tho watermains for supplying troughs, used largely by County ratepayers.—Received. - vgi’£> Moody and Co. (Mt. Eden, Auckland) asked for a settlement an regard to tho waterworks contract, and agreed to accept the amount withheld, together with £BO 16s 3d for plant and material. This account seemed to have been overlooked. They asked for a prompt settlement of, their claim, £396, wTongtully kojt back,oh account of overtime penalty, and’ tho £BO, otherwise they would take legal proceedings. The Mayor stated that he acknowleged the letter, and informed the writers that it would be referred to the Engineer. Goiisidorabie discussion took place in the matter, strong exception being taken to tlie tone adopted by the writers. The amount was passed for N nayment. MR. REES’ SCHEME. Mr. 1 \Y. L. Rees notified the withdrawal of his- tramway proposals. He would avail himself of the permission given to use the roadway for a tramway. Cr. Sheridan' did not remember any permission being given him to run a private tramway on the roads. If. ■>> - ■ L was to be contradicted, now was the time. Cr. Bright thought it better to raise the question when Mr. Rees came forward with a definite proposal. If permission had been given, it was not permission for all time. It was decided to reply that as the present proposals- were withdrawn, die Council would be pleased to give consideration to any future application. THE ROEBUCK ROAD BRIDGE. Mr. P. McLoughliu wrote stating that when he was directed by the Engineer to cease work on the Roeiuick Road Bridge contract on Feb. 13fch, he notified the Council that he ~~ would' hold them responsible for the • delay, and claim the sum of £5 per week for all such time as he was 'U'Pt from going on. He therefore demanded the sum of £9O, being the time included from Feb. 13th to May 30th. , ‘ The niattcr was discussed in committee, and ii was decided to r eply - that the Council could not acknowledge any liability -of his claim. Tlie Engineer reported as follows: '“Metal: The contractors are carrying out-their contracts for the delivery of Pa tut alii metal in a satisfactory manner. A complaint .reached me on 'Monday that there was a shortage of metal at the quarry, some of the dravS being kept waiting, as no material was available. Roebuckroad: Bridge approaches: Air. AlcLoughlin has more than half completed the shingling of Roebuckroad bridge approaches. I expect he will have finished by the end of '.' the week, after which'the Borough foreman can proceed to erect the protection fences. Tar and sanding : The gang has been kept continually busy during the weoek repairing the crossings and footpaths. The report was adopted. The Public Works Committee reported that they' could not a satisfactory casual man to drive the road-roller. Hay, Borough Turncock, reported that the water service was now m first-class working order, and. not a single leak had occurred.
