INVERCARGILL, Jan, 27

The first wool sale of the season (the December one was abandoned) was held to-day. About the usual number of representatives and buyers were present, and bidding was spirited, particularly for anything fashionable. Merino was practically tin represented, only a few odd -lots being offered, and the wool most in demand was half-bred and fine crossbred, particularly crossbred hoggets, which elicited "strong competition right through, and sold at higher rates than was anticipated. Brokers and vendors were prepared for an all-round drop on last year’s prices, but this was less noticeable in these finer classes of wool. Fine crossbred reached as high as 11 1d and halfbred lliid. The prices ranged as follows: —Merino 10id to 9id, halfbred 11 ltd to Bd, fine crossbred Hid to Bd, strong ditto Sd to od. Bellies and pieces showed considerable falling off in value, hut wool in these classes was heavy, and the decline may be attributed to this cause. All classes of wool were of much more fatty nature than is usual here, and this' fact is explained by the warm, dry season.
