CRICKET

TOKOMARU V. SATURDAY ELEVEN.

The visiting team of Tokomaru cricketers concluded their series of matches at Victoria Domain on Saturday, when they met an eleven representing the Saturday players of the Poverty Bay Cricket Association. Young, Lasker, Charles, Babb, and Harkor were absent when the match commenced at 10. tit), consequently the local eleven luul not a single regular bowler on the licit!. The Tokomnru captain, W. Oates, won tho toss from W. Gibson, who led tho local team, and the latter Imd to take the field with all the regular howlers absent. However. P. MeC'oll, tho Wanderers captain, rose to the occasion, and bowled splendidly, keeping a lino length and sending down over after over with muchinoliko precision. Tho visitors totalled pa j n the first innings, L. Reid, Nelson, W. Oates, Jolly, and the Row \Y. Robinson being responsible for the runs. The first-named batsman placed a good innings, while Nelson rattled up his score in quick time. .MeCo 11 howled thirteen overs for 23 runs, and captured live wickets, and it is diilieult to imagine how tho local team would have fared without him. The local eleven made a poor showing in tho first innings against tlie excellent length bowling of G. Oates and L. Reid, and were all dismissed for 75, the Gisborne captain being tho only batsman to make tho semblance of a stand. The Const eleven compiled So in tho second innings. Jordan being top-scorer with a well-made 20, while Nelson, Brown and W. Oates also batted well. W. Gibson, six for 37, was the most successful bowler, and the East Coast men appeared all at sea to his slow breaks, though Nelson hit 16 off three successive balls, only to be well caught by Burke off the last ball of the over* at long-on. Barker, four for 3S, also bowled well. This left tiro local men with 103 to get to win in about an hour and a half. Thanks to a splendid performance by George Barker, the runs were obtained with 25 minutes to spare for the loss of «ix wickets; and the local eleven thus won by four wickets. Barker was in capital form, and compelled the admiration of everyone present by the variety of his scoring strokes, and tho power he got behind his ex-cellently-timed drives and pulls. Bad •t not been for the impartiality with which he banged the many bcwlers xho were changed in rapid succession : t is doubtful whether the local men could have made tho runs in time. The teams lunched together at tho Record Reign Hotel,, and at the con•lusion of tho match cheers wero exchanged. The Gisborne captain, -n behalf of the Poverty Bay Cricket Association, expressed the pleasure ho visit of the Tokomaru team had occasioned, and assured the visitors hat the visit would he returned at is early a date as possible. Messrs R. Thehvall and R. Reid acted as unpires. The following ore tho scores:—
