LABOR CONFERENCE AT HULL

IMPORTANT RESOLUTIONS

United. Press (Received Jan. 22, 10.47 p.m.) LONDON, Jan. 22. At the Hull conference Air. J. Atkinson, the representative* of the Paper Stainers’ Union, moved that the Labor Party’s ultimate object be the obtaining for the workers the full results of their labor, by overthrowing the present competitive system of capitalism, and the institution of a system of public ownership and control. Mr. A. V. Gray, the son of an ALP.. declared that they could not attain Socialism until air intelligent democracy wanted -it with all their hearts. He was convinced that the whole trend of modern' society and industrial revolution' was .towards Socialism. Air. H. Quelch, socialising leader, protested .against the Labor Party sailing under sealed orders. Alessrs. J. R. Clynes, A. 11. Gill, and P. F. Curruii* AIs.P., protested against the coercion which must disrupt the present alliance between tho Labor Party and tho Labor Unionists ultimately. Air. Atkinson’s motion was rejected bv 95.000 to 91,000. Air. AY. Thorne, M.P., moved that the time had arrived when the Labor Party should declare a definite municipal parliamentary programme, based upon the resolutions passed by the annual conference. Air. Quelch seconded. The motion was defeated largely without division.

The Hull conference endorsed the nationalisation of railways and the payment of members of Parliament. It was also resolved to favor tile abolition of the House of Lords without discussion. Mr. Clynes urged the better preaching of Socialism in the country instead 1 of quarrelling about it at the conference.
