THE CULLINAN DIAMOND.
Tho Transvaal’s gilt to the King, tho great Cullman diamond, was presented to him at Sandringham on his sixty-sixth birthday. The royal jewels of England now (says tho “Manchested Guardian”) number among them tho largest diamond in the world—that is, if it does not suffer badly in the cutting—and tho diamond with the most romantic history. The latter, the lvoli-i-Noor, or “Mountain of Light” was .recut after it was brought to England, tho Princo Consort himself starting the work on tho 6th oi July, 1852, Owing to tho flattened and oval shape of tho stone tho pattern selected by those who advised the Queen in tho matter involved the greatest possible amount of loss, and from a stone of 18S 1-6 carats it was reduced to one of 106 1-16 carats. And it actually cost £SOOO to bring abut this result. Tho Koh-i-Xoor was valued before being .recut at £140,000. In its present state the Cullman diamond is thought to be worth about £200,000.
