THE MID-DEVON ELECTION

NEWSPAPER COMMENTS

United Press Association—Copyright (Received Jan. 20, 9.16 p.m.) LONDON, Jan. 20. The Daily Maul and Express attribute the Liberal defeat at Mid-Devon as being largely the result of alarm at socialistic legislation. The Times says that the Mid-Devon election was a great surprise, and a bitter pill for the Government, but the Unionists will not regain power until they compose their internal dissensions and present an unbroken front.

Tli Chronicle describes the result as the worst blow Government lias received, and as a great victory won fairly and squarely on tariff reform, and views it us a victory for protection.

The . Tribune says:—The electors have voted against freetradc, and this shows the necessity for incessant vigilance.

The Morning Post states that with unhesitating leadership and efficient local candidates, no rural constituency could withstand tariff reform.

(Received Jan. 20, 11.10 p.m.) LONDON, Jan. 20. Tho Standard says that the MidDevon electors recognise that tho Unionists have now a distinct programme, and aro loyal to Mr. Balfour.
