THE BUSH FIRES
Press Association. NEW PLYMOUTH, Jan. 20. During the past three days high winds carried fires through this district, and big losses of fencing, grass and bush aro reported. The settlers have been in a state of great anxiety owing to tbc rapid spread of the fire. Word was received to-day from Raliotu that a six-roomed bouse belonging to Mr. C. J. Smith, of Raliotu, and occupied by Mr. George Earl, lias been destroyed. The Opunake Sawmill Company had twenty chains of tramway destroyed, but the mill escaped, though completely surrounded by fire. A big shed on a. farm, owned by Mr. 11. Morrow, was .de-. stroyed, but though the house caught twice is was saved by strenuous exertions. A message from Uruti states that Mr. Musker’s residence with all the contents was totally consumed by bush fires on Sunday night.
