TWO FACES
An eminent brain specialist recently said that in a lew years timo
"motor maniacs would probably bo found in large numbers in the asylums.” The latest evil caused by motoring is said to bo an "automobile face.” Tlio nervous system can’t last very long under tho strain of toolin.!’; an automobile seventy miles an hour, says an American contemporary. So it shows first of all in' the features.. The automobile lace has eonie lo be recognised among tlio medical profession. But there is another face that is more easily and frequently recognised. and flint is the drink face. Alas! alas! this is everywhoro soon, whether in the secluded retirement of a small village, nr in tho city with its busy and complex life. And tho worst of it is that this lace is not only worn by the rruilty victims of the drink, but bv tho innocent victims. It is not oiilv seen dn the painted, bleareyed, anil bloated features of tlio drinker, but in tlio gaunt and sad countenances- —Nature’s written bioe rani lies—of the poor liolnloss women and childrn who are unwilling sufferers through the Liquor Traffic. Jlio question for us to consider and snlvo is: When is this drink face to I'"como as extinct as tlio Moa! A\hon, nil not before, we abolish the cursed Traffic that produces it. Ailv. Ul •
WHY PEOPLE DRINK BEER. Dr. Jas riiliminils has said that •‘ouo reason why boor-drinkers go back so soon and so repeatedly to t'no public-house is because salt, is put into their beer for them. The salt gives a certain piquancy to the flavor of the beer bv irritating the nerves of the tongue, and it serves also to set the kidneys going, and bring the customer back to.the pub-lic-house.” What a satire on the drinker that, whilst (ho tailor, grocer. draper, etc., get their customers back by giving them a good artvuc, the publican gets back his customer by giving him a bad article. Addison tells’us that man .is the only animal that laughs; and in view ol the fact referred to, Lord Chester held was not far out when he said that man was the only animal that deserved to be laughed at.
