AN ASSOCIATION FORAIED

A full mooting of the local butchers was held yesterday afternoon, Mr. J. Maynard being in the chair. Mr. C. Duncan acted as secretary pro tern. The formation of the Gisborne Master Butchers’ Association was decided upon. The rules of the Auckland and Dunedin Associations were read, and it was resolved that the Auckland rules in the. main should apply here. 'Considerable discussion took place regarding the credit system and the attitude tiie bakers had taken up. Their action was looked upon as being very sensible, and all were unanimous on the necessity for doing business on .a.cash basis. The bakers’ idea could not be followed exactly and it was decided to give weekly credit only, send out bills on Mondays, and if payment was not forthcoming by AVednesday, that the customer would not bo served. It was stated that this system had been working satisfactorily in New Plymouth for some years. The new method takes effect from the Ist of February. Tiie subject of bad book debts was mentioned, and it was stated that some of the’ butchers had had accounts running into high figures. Meetings are to be held every three months, and the price of meat will be regulated in accordance with tiie market.
, The question of finding a. market for hides, skins, tallow, etc., was de!erred, owing to a report that a ftydney firm will start a fellmongery business here.
A permanent secretary will he appointed later, and another meeting will be called. ’
