Press Association. HASTINGS. A middle-aged man, named Robert Large, driver of a grocer’s cart, mot his death in the street this afternoon through his horse bolting. He fell from tho vehicle, and the wheel passed over his abdomen. He died in a few minutes. AUCKLAND. A man named Henry Thomas Lowes Griffin, of AA’hangarei, formerly of Dunedin, was taken seriously ill at a boarding-house last evening. The doctors treated tho patient for strychnine poisoning, of which ho showed symptoms. Griffin was then removed to tho hospital, where lie died later as the result of poisoning by strychnine. The bodv of a man aged about 2o years, sft' Sin in height, slight m build, and of fair complexion, was found (load on tho beach at St. Ilclier's Bay with cyanide of potassium beside lum. Letters were found m iiis pocket addressed to*’*Joe, and a reference was made therein to a Dunedin young lady staying in Auckland. Later on the body was identified as that of Joseph Breeze. lie was employed last moiltli UJ Air. Kendcdl, draper, as porter. As far as is known he is unmarried. GKEYTOWN. The first case under the Gaming Act will be heard at Alartinborough on the 14th. The Lower \ alley Jockey Club had tlie results and dividends' of tho first day printed on the race cards for the second day, but tho purchaser of the privileges sold the cards at other places than tho course. Information is laid against the Greytown Standard as printer of tho cards, though tho club was the publisher. NEW PLYMOUTH. Twelve bands have entered in A grade at the approaching contest, and seven in the B grade. The following additional entries have been received : Baritone solo, 17 ; flugel horn, 10; E flat bass, 15; B flat bass, S; B B bass, 12; euphonium, 14; B flat cornet, 36; E flat (cornet soprano), 13; tenor trombone, 20; Bass trombone, 8; tenor horn, 27; trombone trio.. 11; quartette, IS; drums, 7 each. So far no bands have notified withdrawal from tho contest. CHRISTCHURCH. The price of oatmeal has been reduced from £lB to £l7 .as from yesterday. Tlie Eangiora Borough Council last night appointed Air. Jas. Aligns, of Temuka, to be manager. There were five applicants. 0 AMARU. For having procured liquor during flu' currency of a prohibition order, Alfred Aliller was fined £5, and in default 30 days’ imprisonment. DUNEDIN. The Union Company have purchased a lacsimilo of their steamer lvaiapoi for tho cargo service, and will call her Kaitangata. This year tho mayoralty contest will bo confined to Crs. McDonald and ‘Walker. A meeting will be held next week to consider tho formation of another mounted infantry corps, for Dunedin.
