TURAXGAXUI SPRINGS A SURPRISE.
(Special to Times.) AUCKLAND, Jan. 7. The tournament was continued today, when some splendid games were witnessed. The Gisborne teams have been doing splendidly, and 1 anticipate that they will win their section. They defeated Ponsonbv bv 49 to 43. "In this game Alartin easily won his rink, and succeeded in winning tho aggregate. Surprises were tho order of the day on the Auckland green, whereon Peinuera went down before Masterton by 15 points; but the biggest of all Hie surprises was the play of the Turi.mganui teams. Their first- game of tho day was against tlie leading rinks (Carlton). The redoubtable Kilgonr went down before Alartin s team L.v 2S to 22, but Gniulin’s team suffered defeat at the hands of AA ilson by 2-> to 15. The game was a tough email through, and the win lor Carlton was all luck. With (Paulin's team laying the shot on the last head, Wilson played a lucky smack, knocking the shot howl out and lying 2. Gaudin missed his drive. Hail the nick not- eventuated there was every chance of Turangamti lying 2 and tieing. The game was a surprise to onlookers, and more so to Carlton, who had been told they had ‘‘a soft thing” on. They -admitted it was their hardest game. In their next es av Turangamti met- Newtown, the holders of the southern championship, and vanquished the veterans badly. Alartin especially punished his opponents, and drew Gaudin out of the fire, who had gone under b.v 2 points. The opinion was heard freely on the ground that Turangamti had’been, to list' a sporting term, "running a slinter” on the first day. It seems a peculiar thing for them to have gone down so -badly on the first day against weak teams and yet to "hold up their end” as they did against the best. All I can put it down to is bad luck and nervousness on the debut meeting. In their game against A’ictoria Tiirang.inui again ‘‘surprised the natives.” This team was one of tlie cracks, but with superb play Turangamti lowered their colors to an attack of 51 to 33, Alartin defeating Norwood by 29 to 17, while Gaudin vanquished the veteran Sneddon by 22 to 16. To-morrow Turangamti meets AA’averley and Karori, and has a bye. The Karori teams are being badly treated by all opponents. They sty Victoria ran over them by 66 to 14, and AA’averloy by 78 to 17. The weather is first-class, and everything is working smoothly and harmoniously. The finals are to be played on Thursday. l
