ROWING.

On mg t 0 holiday making and other ‘ Ittractions rowing lias been at a standstill during the past week to a certain degree, and the sculling race ~ r ,,- r ; Droad’s trophy (Poverty Bay Glub) lias been spoiled to a certain extent; many of the competitors being unable to row. The indifferent handicapping lias also caused a slump m some of the stock, some ox tiie good men having been frozen out for the duffers, and at tho present time the race looks like a good tliingtor Win- V. tors with losec start. On night lie met lfecs Jones, and'"made such good use of his handicap that tho former never had the slightest chance of catching him up, and ho won by a good margin. The Trial Fours (Poverty Hav Club) which were selected early in the week for trophies presented by Mr. Harris has brought out a field of nine crews, and as some of them are very well matched and are in active training some good finishes should result, although the time between the drawing of file crows and tile, racing, about two weeks, is not sufficient to enable the crews in some oases to get enough practice to enable them to have the combination nedessary for absolute uniformity of swing and action ; and the main filing with some of tho crews seems to be'bulloeking spending some of their energy rrsWjrzfyT At the present time I woijjd prefer the chances of J. Webb’s a?,d J. Xiicholns’ crews to supply the winners. Manv of the men are training vigorously, with the laudable idea of representative honors, and may their efforts ho rewarded.

There are several names of aspiring oarsmen on tho list for those in the Poverty Hay Club willing to eo to Napier for the regatta for the Maiden and Junior fours. A "ood crew may yet be selected for one 0 f these events: hut if they hope To have my chance the crews should be selected at an early date to allow then to get into practice. I believe McDuffie brothers will, represent the olub in the double afnl sculling, events, provided a suitable boat can be secured for them to race in, and this combination would make a good .showing, provided they are well coached for the event. They are two vonpowerful oarsmen, but require some polishing up in the liner points to enable them to hold their own with some of the competitors they will encounter at N'ciuer.
