TOURNAMENT AT AVELLINGTON Press Association. AVELLINGTON, Jan. 2. Tho AVellington provincial lawn tennis championship and handicap tournament opened yesterday at Day’s Bay. There were nearly 400 entrio.. including players from Westport, Blenheim, Dunedin, Masterton, Feilding, and Christchurch. Good pi-ogre ;x was made with tho games in the'’men’s handicap doubles, ladies’ handicap singles, and ladies’ handicip dcables, and with the championships, of which the finals will probably be played on Friday. In the Taranaki tennis tournament Fisher and Peacock defeated Wallace and Dickie (who won the Now Zealand championship doubles) in the somi-fi :al by 6-4, 7-5. Parker heat H. Brown in the semi-final of the single::, 6-4. 6-2. Misses Powdrell and Gray beat. Misses Nunneley and Baker, 6-4, 3-6, 6-2, and Misses Wellwood and Hitchings l -at Misses Travers and Ward, 6-3, 4-6, 6-3. Combined Doubles (semi-finals): Peacock and Miss Ward beat Dickie and Miss Powdrell, 6-3, 6-1. NEW PLYMOUTH, Jan. 2. Fine weather favored the Taranaki Lawn Tennis Association’s tournament, and tliero was a largo attendance of tho public.
