CHRISTMAS AT MORERE
(Contributed.) After the prolonged spell of hot weather, it is not- surprising that tlioso who could manage it took advantage of tho holidays to spend a few days in tho country. No more ideal spot could bo imagined than Aforero for a summer holiday. Situated J 3 miles from Gisborne, tho
trip can bo douo easily in live or six hours. 'Picturesquely situated in a hollow of the hills on tho banks of tho Nulialot river, Morere offers an idonl health resort, where the harassed and worried business man can not only eseapo the heat and burden of tho city hy drinking in the pure free air of tho highlands, but can also lavo his tired limbs in the. baths at tho hot springs. There are few chronic diseases in which mineral waters cannot he used with at least some advantage. According to Dll'. Hopo Lewis, formerly Government medical officer at Rotorua Sanatorium, where thermal ■'treatment is applied in a suitable 'and methodic manner, the appetite is developed, digestion is effected with greater ease, tho skin performs its functions with increased activity,-the blood circulates more freely, the. glandular Secretions are stimulated, the temperature of tho body is raised, and the strength is augmented, 'fe . any wogder, therefore, that la,ffß)i>jy!m--bers each year spend Christinas and New Year at such a health resort as Morere. . The scenic reserve which contains tho springs is as pretty a pieco of natural bush as could be pictured, livery imaginable species of native flora is there, from the lordly rinm down to the delicate fronds of the maidenhair fern. Nikau palms abound, and there are two groves ol these palms in the reserve which are worth going a long way to 'see. The path which leads to the baths winds for about a mile along the hanks of a small creek, and is a charming walk indeed. The baths are divided into separate compartments for ladies and gentlemen, and are lighted day and night by natural gas taken from the surface of tho water. The temperature of ' the water is . unpleasantly high, and not everyone call stand it until they have become accustomed to it. There is a powerful hot shower bath, which is very popular, while any degree of cold water can bo obtained in the pools outside the hatlis. The accommodation at Alorere is first-class. Air J'. S. Cooper has had lately erected a commodious private hotel, containing 26 bedrooms, _ and containing every modern convenience to be expected so far-back. Air Cooper was his own architect, and is to Ac complimented on tho manner in which tho buildingisdcsigned. Drainage and sanitation is a feature of the building, a large sceptic tank being the means by whicli these important matters aro carried out. A firstclass table is kept, and the guest’s every want and comfort aro attended to in a manner which leaves no room for complaint. A store and comfortable billiard-saloon are in a detached building. One of the pleasantest adjuncts of the building is a cool, deep verandah, which runs tho whole length of the building;and is 12ft in width.
Tourists can also find first-class accommodation at the Oil Springs Hotel and it is only necessary- to state that Air B. Aislabie is tile licensee to prove that everything is of the best.
