.BREAKDOWN OF A WORLD BEATER. ALFRED SHRUBB MAY NOT RUN AGAIN. A New York cablegram of November 2 says: l —Alfred Slirubb, the world’s champion long-distance runner, broke down, completely in -his match race with J. 15. Marsh, the Indian runner, at AVinnipeg. Slirubb undertook to give Alarsli a twominute handicap in a. fifteen-mile race, and had made up the handicap at seven miles, anil gained' another minute, when the famous runner was forced to be led from the' track. At first- it was thought that there was nothing serious with the champion’s leg, but, after careful examination by a physician, it was stated that it was more than probable that the Britisher would not She able to don his •running togs again. Since Slirubb arrived in this country ho has had considerable trouble with his legs, owing to the many hard races he had while in Australia, nut by careful attention to them he was enabled to get them back into their former condition. The Canadian people felt extremely sorry at the inopportune breakdown- of the English champion, for it had been practically settled that since Longboat had been declared ineligible, to .race in America, lie would forsake tlio -amateur ranks and at last meet Slirubb. Now that Slirubb has broken down it is evident that these two acknowledged y-liani-pions of the world will never meet.
