The first instinct of ordinary 'woman when she sees someone in a pretty gown or hat is to try and get one as like it as jiossible without deliberately copying. That is really foolish for it is this perpetual desire to have what everyone olese lias that: is the principal reason why we see so much ugliness in our daily lives. The fact that a dress or hat looks well on Gladys, who is tall and slender, is the very reason why it will look hideous on Inicy, who is short and plump. The same limitations may be applied to the interior of one’s house. A woman starts oil on a round of afternoon calls. She admires the white papered walls in one house and the Chesterfield chairs m another, and the Turkey rugs in a third, and directly the cireumstancs permit she proceeds to furnish her own drawing-room with Georgian white walls, and the beautiful effect is ruined by the heavy Eastern coloring of the carpet and equally inappropriate chairs and couch. All these tilings may be in excellent taste, hut when together in 0110 room they are quite out of place ,and the effect is “anyhow.” The development of personr/’. taste is the cult of the moment, and the catch phrase of those who consider they are. above criticism is “The whole duty of women is not to ho ill the fashion, but out of it.”
