Seven thousand were present at the opening of the Indian National Congress at Surat, including 2000 delegates. Extremists interrupted the speakers, who were counselling moderation in local matters. A tremendous uproar followed on the nomination of Arabinda Ghose • as president, chiefly oil the part of Bengalese. Ultimately the sitting was suspended.
