CATHOLIC PICNIC.

The Catholic societies held a nicnic at Haifa rata hi yesterday, wuen about 100 members and their friends journeyed out bv train and spent a very enjoyable day. On arriving at their destination a splendid dinner was partaken of, provided by the ladies, when full justice was dono to the good things provided. A largo and varied programmo of sports was arranged by a committee appointed by the Hibernians, and the various races were evenly contested. The sports committee, consisting of Messrs. V. Petterson, Segedin, F. H.iuglioy, J. 'Lenelian, G. Petterson, J. O’Haiilon, and 31. O’Halloran, carried out their duties in a very satisfactory manner. The Rev. Father Lane and the ltev. father Hignam officiated as judges, and had some very close finishes to decide. Mr. J. O'Hunlon gave great satisfaction as starter. The following are the events run and the respective winners: —Tooths, from l(i to 20 —F. Liddlo i, J. l’oilock 2; Ladies, 10 to 20— Miss Martin 1, Miss Maughey 2; lVoedlo-threading Race —Miss Martin ifnd Mr. Pollock; Hibernian Handicap—R. Parker 1, F. Haugliey 2; chick Race—Gus Petterson 1, F. Haugliey 2; Children of Mary’s Han-dicap—-Miss Alley 1, Miss S. Haughey 2; Young Ladies’ Race—-Miss -Alley 1, Miss Haugliey 2; Men’s Race, 20 and over —R. Parker 1, M. O’Halloran 2; Married Ladies’ Race —Mrs. P. Barry 1, Mrs. Haugliey 2; Cigarette Race —Mr. IC. Williams and Miss -Maynard ; Three-legged Race for ladies and gouts—iUiss and Mr.‘F. Haugliey; Tug-of-AVar, Hibernians versus all-comers —Hibernians won after a pull of about five minutes; Three-legged Race for men—Patrick John Aluidoon and Prank Haugliey; Married Men’s Race —Jas. Rieley T, J. Haugliey 2; Tug-of-AVar, Julies, teams picked by Gus Petterson and Martn O’Halloran—After a very ev-enly-contested pull Gus Petterson's team won. The Rev. Father Lane in a very pleasing manner presented tho prizes to the respective winners, the ) rn.es being particularly serviceable ' »nd good.

A number of children’s races were also run, the Revs. Father Lane and Hignam donating prizes, with wnieh the children . were very pleased. Messrs. Phil Barry 'and V. Petterson as joint secretaries performed their part of the business in a verysatisfactory manner, and by their efforts helped to make the picnic a great success. About 4.30. after again doing justice to the good things provided, a start was made for homo, the train leaving about 5.20, all being entirely pleased with tlieir outing.
