PROTECTION OF TOBACCONISTS CHINAMEN PROSECUTED IN AVELLINGTON. Press Association. AVELLINGTON, Dec. 18. At the Alagistrate’s Court to-day, Fook Leo and Co. and You Lee pleaded guilty to charges of selling and delivering cigarettes and tobacco after 8 n.an. on December 3rd and 6tli •respectively. The informations were laid under tlio Shops and. Offices Act Amendment Act ,1907, porhibitmg shopkeepers from selling . tobacco after the hours at which tobacconists are required to close tlieir shops. Defendants had ‘been? warned 'by the Department inspectors of the new legislation, but had persisted in selling goods. His Worship took into consideration the fact that the law i\as a recent one, and that theso were probiblv the first proceedings under it, and penalised each defendant with a fine of 20s and-costs. In the case of Fook Lee and Cm the costs amounted to £1 Os 3d, and in You Lee’s case to 12s 3d. His Worship remarked th.it in future cases he would not be so lenient. .
