(Before Mr AV. A. /Bsirtoii; S.'At.) Illegal Boxing Contest.—Henry Pearce was charged with holding a hexing contest in Gladstone Road on October 20tli without having obtained a permit to do so. The charge was brought under the Police O (fences Act of 1901 and it is stated that it is probably the first case of the kind brought ,iil tlio Dominion. No appearance was made by defendant, who is in Dunedin. Sergt. AVillinils stated that defendant had a boxing and wrestling booth erected in Girt stone Road. Admission money was charged at the door. The boxin; was a very quiet display and every thing was carried on in an orderly fashion. Witness told defendant after the first performance that lie liad better discontinue and tliis was done. His Worship took into consideration the fact that defendant had ceased when requested to do so. A fine of Cl with 7s costs was imposed in default. 4 days’ imprisonment.
