In putting off in a launch from -Hick’s Bay to board the Waikare for Napier, Drs. Mason, Romaic, and Do Lisle, who recently paid a visit to the -Coast, had a perilous experience. The boatman was washed overboard, but was rescued.
The prizes won at the Waerenga-a-'bika sports on November 21, under the auspices of tho Public Schools Athletic Association, are to be presented at tho Gisborne school at 2.30 this afternoon, by Mr. "F. J. Rowley, tho headmaster.
‘The clouds of smoko hanging over the town were more dense yesterday than on any -previous day this summer. The sun was hardly visible during the greater part- of the day, and just before setting it usual gobbed color was changed by the smoke to a deep red. It is estimated that within a radius of 40 miles around Gisborne 30,000 .acres of bush were burning yesterday.
At tho summoned meeting of tlie Loyal -Gisborne Lodge -held on Monday evening, Bro. .8- D. McPherson, N.G., presided. Nominations for office for the coming year were -received, four members,. ’being; nominated for the A syllabus for 1908, drawn up by the committee, was unanimously approved. Tho -election of officers takes place on December 30th.
An old resident states that tlie present exceptionallly hot weather is probably tho greatest during the past twenty years. Another resident- has a very largo cistern', and up to the present it always contained water, but now it is quite dry. Many people are carting water. As a consequence of the lacfk of rain; feed is scarce, and tho output of one milk vendor was reduced by five gallons one morning from what it was the previous morning.
The quarterly summoned meeting of tho Court William Gladstone, A.0.F., was held last night "in the Masonic Hall, when the following office-bearers were elected:—C.R., Bro. Hargreave; S.C.R., Bro. A. Robinson; ro-dlected—Secreta-ry, Bro. File; treasurer, Bro. Bushnell; S.W., Bro. J. Hird; J.AV., Bro. F. Lawton; 5.8., Bro. H. W. Thomson; JB., Bro. Claikson. Bro. F. Lawton was elected delegate from the Court to the United Friendly Societies’ Conference.
The -last number to hand of “The Lady’s Realm” contains as -a “special” an article entitled “A Woman in tho .New Zealand Alps.” 'lt is contributed by Mrs. Malcolm Ross, _ a well-known- lady journalist, and is illustrated -by photographs taken by her -husband, who has a. colonial- .reputation as a mountaineer, and also as., a. journalist, Mrs. Ross, has written an article'which should be of exceeding interest to -her- English -read.ers, whilst tho photographs -reproduced are of quito exceptional merit.
There appears to bo a great scarcity of labor in this district at present, and difficulty is experienced in securing men., for shearing and harvesting operations. It appears that shoarors prefer the sheds which have machinery, and as all the way-back stations have the machines the shearers have all gono inland, and those flock-owners who prefer to shear with the blade have tlio greatest difficulty in securing men. As much as Is Gd and hour and found is being offered for liearvesting, but this tempting offer is unavailing to supply the necessary number of men required, and 2s iui hour -and found is being demanded in some districts.
The class-firing of the'School Cadets is proceeding at present. A start was made last Friday morning at six o’dlock, when shooting at the 100, 200, and 300 yards ranges was taken. Another squad went out on Saturday morning. Captain Olsen had G 7 members over at tho _ range on Monday, and Captain Morice liad 47 there yesterday completing at 200, and 300 yards. To-day Major Kinder will take tho three highest scores at each of the different ranges to compete for the Trafalgar gold medal, presented by Mr. Townley (a challenge medal), and a silver medal presented by Major Kinder. The latter will becoino the property of the winner. At the same time, the scoring will bo -recorded for the North Island Shield for cadets.
In discussing the phenomenal spell of dry weather yesterday with a representative of this journal, a wellknown sheepfarmcr of Patucahi district gavo it as his conviction that we were in for a prolonged drought. He based his prognostication on the unusually early appearanco of the insect pests. In sinking a mast for grass-seed harvesting the other day, lie stated that there were myriads of cricket grubs a foot beneath the surface of tho ground, -and no surer indication of drought could exist than tho early appearanco of crickets. Again, he stated, the bot-flies, which usually did not appear in numbers until after Christmas, were very troublesome, and had been seen in large numbers for some considerable time past. Horse-stingers were also very plentiful.’ The early anpearanco of these insects', he stated, was a sure indication that we were in for a repetition of the droughts —lnch caused such havoc to farmers in Otago a short time ago. Donald McKenzie, the young man injured on the AVaipori on .Monday night, was yesterday taken to the Hospital, being conveyed thither in a. stretcher borne by six men. ‘The sufferer was none the worse for tlio shifting. During tlio day lie was perfectly conscious, ami was able to move his arms' and' legs a little. At a late hour last night it was reported that .he was making very fair progress.
