A contingent of students from Tc Ante College and a. number of pupils at the Hukarero School, Napier, arrived in Gisborne by the Zealandia on Saturday for their summer holidays.
A good deal of the success achieved by tho Cook County Curious Coont in their opening concent oil Friday night was due to Air R. Clark upon whom devolved tho responsible duties of stago manager.
The meetings held yesterday in connection with the Salvation Army were well attended. The sisters of the corps took a, prominent part at the evening service, giving addresses on various Scriptural lessons.
All arrangements have now been made for the Clrristiuas Treo treat to •bo given in the Salvation Army Barracks on Friday, and-Adjutant Dickens -wishes to ask those who have received tickets to be sure to attend.
The usual promotion examinatiom have been- proceeding in the schools of the district for some time. The examinations in the country schools have now all been completed and those at the Gisborne school will bi finished in a day or two.
Visitors from the Motu district have been struck with the parched aspect of the country between Gisborne and Te ICaraka. Further out- they report there has been a plentiful supply of rain, and everything is looking lresli and green.
Unless rain, falls very soon, several residents whom tho water supply has not yet reached will be suffering from a shortage of water. It is many years since such a long spell of dry weather has been experienced sc early in the season.
Mr. AValter Barnes arrived by the Zealandia on Saturday morning tc complete arrangements for Howard Vernon’s season of musical comedy a-* His Majesty's Theatre, commencing on Boxing Night. The first production will bo “A Trip to Chinatown.”
A dense haze hung over the town and suburbs on Saturday, being attributable, no doubt, ,to the bush fires in the surrounding country. On the cricket ground particles of burnt grass and fern, carried in by tin wind, were falling in great numbers.
Yesterday was certainly one of tilt hottest -days of the season-, and the thermometer registered well over 80 degrees in the shade. A large pop tion of tho population spent a good part of the day either in the river oi sea, in a desperate endeavor to get cool.
One of the many things which strikes visitors to this town is tin high price paid for fish. Tho price keeps up notwithstanding tho fad that there has been a plentiful local supply lately, one dealer alone re cerving over one thousand bundle: last- week.
The Salvation Army Band paid a surprise visit yesterday to the Hospital, and played a number of sel.ee tions, which wore thoroughly appreciated by the patients. It is the intention of tho Band to frequently render programmes at the Hospital on Sunday afternoons.
Extensive preparations have been anado for the concert to bo given in All--McLeod’s grounds in aid of Hie Alangapapa School prize fund. Items will be .given by the -most popular of the local amateurs. Town- patrons will bo taken to the grounds in a conveyance which will leave the Post Office at 7.30 o’clock. Tho Zealandia did not leave Napier until shortly after midnight on. Friday. There was a large quantity of luggage to be put on board and when the vessel was ready for departure, ji was found that tho stoering gear was jammed, causing a further hour’s delay. The steamer proceeded under the guidance of the hand tiller, manned by two of the crew, but shortly after leaving port tho defect was repaired and Gisborne was reached at 0.30 a.m.
ißy the Zoailaivdia, which arrived on Saturday anorning, a consignment of 12 homing pigeons which had been sent by tile Christchurch Homing Society to take place in a race from Cisborne to Christchurch. They were consigned to the manager of the “Times,” and as per instructions they were liberated alt I o’clock yesterday morning from the balcony of this office. On 'being set free the birds circled around over the vicinity of the “Times” office for fully a quarter of am hour to get their bearings, and then took a. straight line for the harbor, whence they were soon lost to view. In a recent : ace from 'Napier to Christchurch tlio winning bird flew the journey in just over nine hours, so it is anticipated that the majority olf the 12 which started from this towm would arrive in the southern city before dark.
