PREFERENTIAL TRADE.

AUSTRALIA’S POSITION. Jnited Press Association —Copyrignt (Received Dec. 15, 4.52 p.m.) LONDON. Dec. 14. Although the Ottawa Free Press describes the cancelling of the mail subsidy as retaliating against the Commonwealth, the Times’ Ottawa correspondent declares that this opinion is not endorsed, for it would be absurd for Canada to retaliate on a sister colony when Mr. Deakan had promised to negotiate for better trade arrangements after the Commonwealth tariff was settled. The Daily Express emphasises the fact of Mr. Lloyd-George obtaining a preferential! reduction in favor of British States, and adds: “It is Australia’s turn to ask what Free Traders will give in return for these and similar boons. The Commonwealth Parliament lias only two possible replies—preference or nothing.”
