NO-LICENSE IN INVERCARGILL. CRIME PRACTICABLY ABOLISHED. WHAT OUR SUPREME COURT JUDGES SAY. THE following press telegram appeared in our papers on Monday last:—“The. Supremo Court sittings at Invercargill opened to-day before Judge Williams, who congratulated the jury on THE REMARKABLE ABSENCE OF CRIME IN THE DISTRICT. There woro only three cases, and none of a serious character.” We may add that in one of these cases no bill was found, by the Grand Jury, and in another the person concerned was found “Not Guilty.” . , , Wo readily admit that the above record, good as it is, does not, in itself, constitute, an unanswerable argument in favor of No-License, but when wo find that similar remarks have been made by tho presiding Judge at each of the Supremo Court sessions held in Invercargill since the liars woro closed, it is impossible to deny their accumulated force. The hotel, bars were closed in Invercargill on June 30th of last yoar. 1. On August 28tli following, at tho Supreme Court sessions—Air. Justice Cooper congratulated tho Grand Jury upon tho fact tlmt 'I'HERB WAS ONL\ ONE CRIMINAL CASE —a charge of forgery. 2 On December 4th, 1906 (at tho 'next sessions) “Air. Justice Denniston congratulated the distrietoii THE ABSENCE OF ' SERIOUS CRIME.” . „ . r .. 3 At the next sessions (AJarcli oth last) “Air. Justico Williams congratulated the Grand Jury upon tho fact, that there were only two criminal cases, neither of them serious. His Honor commented favorably on the fact that THERE WAS SO LITTLE CRIAIE IN SUCH A LARGE DISTRICT. 4. Three months later, at the sanie place, “Air. Justice Chapman said ho was very pleased to congratulate tho Grand Jury on J HE ABSENCE OF CRIAIE FROM IMIS LARGE AND GROWING DISTRICT. Tho calendar was ail exceedingly small one, and IN COMPARISON WITH FORMER TIMES SHOWED A AIARKED DIMINUTION.” 5 In August last (at the next sessions) Air. Justice Williams said — “It is a subject for congratulation that the calendar is so light. There lias been PRACTICALLY A TOTAL ABSENCE OF CRIAIE IN THE DISTRICT DURING THE. LAST THREE AIONTHS.” 6. And, as already stated, at the next sessions, bold on Alonday last, Afr. Justice Williams “cougratullated tho jury on the REMARKABLE ABSENCE OF CRIAIE IN THE DISTRICT.” As already hinted. In any. district congratulations similar to the above innv occasionally be given by our Judges, but when they are tendered \T 'EVERY CONSECUTIVE SITTING OF THE SURREAIE COURT SINCE THE OPERATION OF NOLICENSE (wo' challenge a parallel in any licensed district), the conclusi on is inevitable that No-License has lieru a wonderful success in Invercargill from a moral point of view. Reader, if you want the same results in this electorate, try the same remedv, and .. “STRIKE OUT THE TOR LINE.” (Advt.) C.P.
