FIRE ON A STEAMER.
CREW ABLE TO DEAL WITH IT. Presß Association. WELLINGTON, Dec. 10. The steamer Lord Stanley, which is bortlicd at Taranaki street wharf, is on fire in No. I hold, although the outbreak is not believed to be otf a serious oil'll ruoter. Tlio lire was discovered early this morning. ' Orders woro at onco given to close tlio ventilators, batten down ■the hatches, and pour water into tho hold. Captain Cunningham does net attach much importance to tho lire, and is confident that as far us present indications go tho ship's company wiLl bo quite equal to deal with it. The steamier is from New York, via Australia, ami after discharging hero will proceed to Lyttelton. FIRE SUBDUED; DAMAGE 45100. Later. When the hatches were lifted on tlio steamer Lord Stanley late this afternoon the remains of the fire were sooai extinguished. Tlie damage is well within £IOO, and is confined to tho kerosene and machinery consigned to Wellington.
