Deceased was horn in 1822, and came to the Dominion from England in 1856. Mr. Andrew purchased the lea station in 1866. He acted for many years as a minister in the district; and was twice returned to Parliament. MR, T. M. GRANT. (Special to Times). WELLINGTON. Dec. 8. Mr. T. M. Grant, of tlie Survey Department, whose death occurred unexpectedly at Murchison early oil Friday morning; liad been a capable and valued officer of the Survey Department for many years. He was held in the highest esteem by alt who knew him, ,and his death will come as a great shock to a wide circle of friends, more particularly in Wellington, tlie west coast of the South Island, and in Otago. A few weeks ago, while engaged in his official work in the Nelson survey district (which had only recently 1 een placed under his charge), he had the ■misfortune to bleak his leg in a trap •accident in one of the rough river beds near Murchison. He, however, bore his mishap with cheerfulness, and as late as Friday his relatives in Wellington had letters from Hin to say that he was getting on well, and hoped to he shifted to Nelson in about three weeks time. On- Saturday morning, however, a telegram f-om his wife, who was with him' at Murchison, announced that he had massed away. Mr. Grant, who was, a popular officer, had published some booklets in regard to matters connected with his profession, and in recent years had made a codification of the land laws of N.Z. This. l»a intended publishing on his own ac- ‘ count, but the recent changes in policy made it necessary- for him to revise the whole work. As he was eve: ready to do ;i good work, and as ho was a charming raconteur ail'd an .n----teresting correspondent, liis friendship was greatly valued by many »o had the good .fortune to know him. As an instance of this, his long friendship and correspondence with Hirosi, a Japanese naval officer, who was one of the heroes of the Russo-Japanese war, may he mentioned. Tile letters received from the latter and his little.girl during tlie exciting attacks on Port Arthur and the subsequent operations, were most interesting. Hirosi never forgot- some little kindness shown him many years ago by Mr. -Great, nid the friendship thus established, long before tlie Anglo-Japanese alliance, lasted during the latter’s iifo--time. Mr. Grant leaves a widow and four children, liis wife being a daughter of Councillor Murdoch, of -Wellington. Two of his sisters, Mrs. Malcolm Ross and 'Mrs. T. G. I'al■grave, reside in Wellington, and auotlier sister, Airs. Usinar, in Loudon. IMr. Geo. Grant, of Gisborne, and ,Mr. Norman Grant, of Levin, are .brothers, and Mr. T. W. Whitson, secretary of the Union Co., is a •brother-in-law. United Press Association—Copyright (Received Dec. 9, 0.00 a.m.) ril . SYDNEY, Dec. 8.
