WHERE THE GUANO COMES FROM. Special to Times. WELLINGTON, Dec. 5. Interesting dotails about tho guano depot, known as Malden Island, 3000 miles away from Now Zealand, have been furnishod by Captain Schroder, of tlio schooner Alico. Tlio island ik only six miles by four, _is absolutely without vegetation, rain is scarce, and fresh water is got by condensing. The island belongs to Messrs Grice, Sunnier and Co., of Melbourne, and several hundred tons of guano leave tlio property annually. It is peopled by Kanakas and Cook Islanders and six white men. The. present, manager, Captain Carlson, who lias liis wife and child with him, is known in Now Zoalanil. There being no harbor the mooring buoys are anchored in seventy fathoms of water. Recently a thousand cocoanuts were planted, hut the islanders by stealth dug them up and ate them.
