BOROUGH COUNCIL.

The fortnightly meeting of tlie Borough Council was held last night. Present: His Worsliij) the Alayor (in tlio chair), anil Councillors Williams, Ala tin, Bright, Pottle, Sawyer, Somervell, and AVliinray. ENGINEER’S REPORT.

Tlio Engineer reported : Gladstone road: Repairs aro being carried out as directed. Tlio tarred screenings are being prepared for tlio '"lection between Grey street and j Derby street, and as soon as they lira ready tlio work will be gone on I wil.li. Footpaths: Repairs to tlie tarred 1 footpaths aro being done throughout town. The section of road between Lowe street and the Post Office will ■ bo tarred and sanded as soon as tho foreman cap" get at it. I Roebuck road bridge: This bridge | was completed and taken over from ■ tlie contractor on November 25th. Tlio balance of tlie contract money ! will bo payable to tlio contractor 31 ■days from *tlint date. The contract tor lias practically finished.tlie eartli- ! work, and tlio metalling will bo gone !on with as soon as possible. The immediate approaches to tlie bridge will require to lie neatly fenced otF and a footpath formed. Cr. Williams asked about Gladstone roail. He said tliat a motion was carried at last meeting laying down tliat no more of Gladstone road should bo cut up.—The Engineer said it was done as the result of a misunderstanding. , ROAD AVIDENING.

Afr. AVm. Tattley wrote stating that, he intended to subdivide sections 24, 25. and 42 AVhataupolco. Ho was willing to forego a claim for compensation for a strip of land 25 links wide required for road purposes if the Council would form and shinglo the footpath immediately tlio plan was approved by the Survey Department.—The request was acceded to. HOSPITAL TRUSTEES. The secretary of the Hospital Trustees forwarded a list of contributions, showing that- voluntary contributors paid £290 Gs Id, the Goo'k County Council £SBB 8s sd, and the Borough Council £l6l Us 7d. On the basis of these contributions tlie voluntary contributors were entitled to elect two Trustees, the County Council five, a»d the Borough CounP ;i two. Crs. Bright, and Mann were elected the Council’s representatives. FIRE BRIGADE PLANT. The secretary of tho Firo Brigade wrote asking for 500 ft of new liose. a reel station in West End, boxes in Kniti and AA’hataupoko, to contain :» length of hose, a spray nozzle (for the protection of firemen), and a smoke helmet.—lt was decided) to purchase the plant required. COMAIITTEE REPORTS. The AA’orks Committee reported having taken over tlio Roebuck road bridge from the contractor. The committee suggested that Read’s Quay from the bridge to Childers road bo scarified.—Adopted. Tho Abattoirs Committee reported tliat they had gone carefully into tho matter of management with Alessrs Burton, Government Veterinarian a”d Alopre, Inspector, and had decided to have the hooks of the institution kept by the office staff, and Air Kinnimont, head butcher, had been in the meantime appointed act-ing-manager of the abattoirs.—Adopted.
