The Harbor Board’s sand-pump resumed operations yesterday. Tho Borough Council will to-day take over the reticulation portion of t he waterworks. The meeting of the East Coast Railway League, to have been field yesterday, lias been postpmed until next woelr. A meeting of the Bakers 7 Union will bo held on Saturday evening. A deputation will attend from the Painters’ Union to djscuss the formation of a Trades and Labor Council. Last night the Cook County Curious Coons held a successful practice, .all tho items for tlio entertainment to ho given on the 13th inst. being gone through with groat spirit. A brick-making plant is to be erected on part of Mr Hanson’s farm at Haiti, and the remainder is to be cut up into residential sections. The plant is at present at work at Henderson and is to be brought downto Gisborne in about a month. In connection with the work of the East Coast Railway League a canvass of tho district is to bo made shortly for funds. It is believed that n-any who are unable to attend the League’s meetings will take advantage of such an opportunity _o show their sympathy with the move.n <;it. The annual meeting of the Gisborne auxiliary of the British and Foreign Bible Society is fixed for Thursday, sth jjiat. Afternoon tea will bo provided at Archdeacon Williams’ grounds prior to the meeting, which is timed for 3.30. Admission is free and a record collection for the funds is desired.

The usual monthly meeting of the Utility Poultry Club was held last night at- Air. Alorell’s store, AVliataupoko. Tliero was only a small attendance of members. One new .member was elected. An interesting discussion took place regarding the advisability of holding a show to bring the club and its doings, more before the general public. Action in tho matter was deferred, however, pending discussion at a. fuller meeting.

At tho sitting of the Native Land Commission yesterday, Air. T. A. Coleman, submitted schedules showing tho state of affairs of the East Coast Native Land Trust, of which the following is a summary: Lands sold: Bank security blocks 34,899 acres, realising £105,772; outsido bank securities 16,971 acres, realising £18,673. Lands leased: 60,768 acres, valued at £105,620; annual rental therefrom £4639j set aside for occupation by Natives 37,768 acres, valued at £65,380. Available for leaso or for occupation by Natives iis may bo determined 91,834 acres, valued at £67,500. Shortly!, the Trust has sold 51,870 acres, valued at £124,445, and has still available for disposal 186,388 acres, of a capital value of £363,945, the rental value of which is £4639.

Tlio annual meeting of the Gisborne Painters’ Union was hold li 1 1 night, Air. J. H. Hall presiding c,' er a good attendance. The elect!an < f officers for the ensuing year resulted: President, Air. J. H. Hall (re elected) ; vice-president, Air. Geo A'mcent; secretary, Air. G. Tv. Daiton (re-elected); treasurer, Air H. Gratton ; tyler, Air. F. Selves; committee of management, 'Messrs It. Henzler, G. Seeley, F. Selves, H. Forrest, and E. R. Atkinson; auditors, Messrs F. Selves and H. Beaumont. The projected formation of a Poverty ‘ Bay Trades and Labor Council was discussed, and a deputation was appointed to wait on each of tlio other Unions for tlio purposo of getting the organisation started. Fraternal greetings were extended to the Gisborne Drivers’ Union. A vote of thanks to the retiring officers brought the meeting to a close.

At 7 o’clock on Sunday evening, Air. J. Kennedy (lately with Mr. \V. J. Barlow), who lias started business in AVairoa, arrived in Gisborne, having ridden through from AA r airoa on a motor bicycle. Air. Kennedy left AVairoa at 7 o’oloek on Sunday morning, and reached Tiniroto in three hours twenty minutes. He left Tiniroto at 11.10 a.m., and reached AA r aerenga-o-kui’i at 4.10 p.m. The roads were very bad throughout, particularly between Tiniroto and AVaerenga-o-kui'i. Air. Kennedy explains that the roughness of the road was probably accentuated by the fact that his bicycle was very light, weighing only 65 pounds. Air. Kennedy, thinks that Air. Grace, who rode from Gisborne to AVairoa. some months ago, must have had a very had journey.: Despite the had state of the roadsVhe did not walk more than a mile and a half. Air. Kennedy wavs the country was looking green all along the road, and he speaks in glowing terms of the lake at Tiniroto and the beautiful view from Pardkanapa. It is worthy of note that the bicycle used bv Air. Kennedy travelled from Napier to AVairoa in eight hours. Air. Kennedy will probably leave for AVairoa to-morrow morning.
