ACETYLENE GAS.
NEAV ANID IAIPROAkED GENERATOR. Air.'J. H. AA’arrcn, of this town, has taken over the agency for AVaiiroa and Cook Counties of the “Sunrise Improved’? Acetylene Gas Generator. ■■ • ■A “Tillies” reporter yesterday waited on Air. AVarrmi to get a few particulars .as to tilio new appliance. At first si gilt one is struck with its simplicity. In most generators there are a. large number of screws,’ but- in this one there are none. A further good feature is that there are no rubber or leather washers to get out of order, thus minimising the danger of an explosion. As soon as the cylinders are charged the gas is available. This is a great advantage over x’revious generators, in which i.t took some time for the process of gas-making to start. Tlie Sunrise -generator has two- cylinders which are charged with carbide, and one of these can be taken out and re-charged without the light being interfered with. All the carbide put in tho cylinders is used, there being absolutely no waste in this resiiect. The generator has no separate purifying apparatus. After being made the gas liasses through water three times, and when it issues at the jet .is thoroughly purified and cooled. The generator on view yesterday had two cylinders, but if it is desired to make more gas two more cylinders .may be put in. One of flic strongest features of the generator is that lights may be used about it with the greatest freedom without any risk of am explosion. In the cylinders there are compartments for the carbide, and this enables one to charge the generator for a long time without risk of the carbide becoming caked, and therefore wasted. It is claimed that the gas manufactured can be used both for cooking and for motive power. The generator was charged in the pre-. sence of the reporter, and the operation took, as the , proprietors claim, no longer than the filling and trimming of a kerosene lump would take. In. conclusion it must be said that the generator is the acme of simplicity, and a mail of ordinary intelligence could pick ui) the working of it in a. few minutes. It has been very pop ui a r in A r ictori.a, where, .among other installations, two towns do their street lighting with Sunrise plants. 'The machine has •also met with great success in Haw-ke’s-Bay. Mr. AVarren. is at i)resent executing an' order for a 'big plant for the Koseland Hotel., Alakaraka, and he has several other orders in hqml for country fesidents. Air. AVarren, in conversation with the reporter, drew especial attention to the fact that the generator is entirely manufactured in the district, so that there will never be any trouble about repairs or the replacing of parts.
