THE PASSENGER TENDER. li.i reply, to a letter ifrom the I Board drawing attention to the delay which frequently occurs in landing ‘passengers and also the inconvenience caused by landing passengers late at night the manager of the Union e.s. Coy. wrote that as the changes asked for were farreaching m their effect the matter would he carefully considered. The manager for New Zealand of the Huddart Parker Coy. wrote as follows:—“We will instruct our mas-
tors to see that no unnecessary time is lost owing to the fault of those on board the boat. As regards the Tuatea. making a second trip, this appears to us to be rather,a matter for the owners to consider than for us. At the same tame, we may say that we are not in the habit <u .transporting cargo in the passenger tender, and we imagine there aouid h© considerable public dissatisfaction if passengers were taken ashore first and then had to wait for their luggage to be brought. To some j people, such as commercial travel-

The Harbormaster (Oapt. AV. Camming) reported that sinco last report 39 steamers and 8 sailing vessels had arrived and departed. Tiie following soundings in the channel were taken on the 22nd inst: End of breakwater 14ft, fourth bollard from end of breakwater 7ft, Snark’s Landing 7ft, big crano Bft, AA’aikama© Bft bin, . along town wharf 7ft to 9ft ,along Haiti wharf (lower end) 7ft 6in. Some silting had occurred along the upper part of the Haiti wharf and some dredging would he required. OVERSEER’S REPORT,
- Tho. Overseer reported that the sand-pump dredge had been thoroughly overhauled and a start made on the .Haiti reclamation on Nov. 15th. , Shortly after starting .the dredge on the following Monday a wheal connected,with, the excavator was broken, but this had now been replaced. •‘The broken portion of floor iu No 3 shed bad been asphalted. The Kiaiti breastwork Was still unfinished owing to non-arrival of timber. The wharf would be started during the coming week. Tlio John Townley bad taken 40 loads of spoil to sea and the small dredge, bad lifted 955 yards of rock and 255 yards silt. Both blasting punts were at work. The gravel taken from the Haiti beach totalled 109 loads DREDGEIMASTER’S REPORT. Oapt. G. P. Solvander reported that during the month- the John. Toivnley bad raised 2300 yards of' mud from abreast of the Kiaiti
wharf, .1300 yards of sand from along the breakwater, 600 yards of clay . from “mid-channel abreast of the -Harbor Board office, in all about 4200 yards. The decks of the dredge were becoming worn, and he recommended that they be sheeted :

on which date there was a delay of two hours and a half, owing to the breaking of the slewing pinion. The proposal regarding sheathing tlio declr-of tho dredge was referred to the Work’s Committee with power to act. s - ; - . GENERAL. Recent alterations to the by-laws Were, confirmed. ■The tender of E. Habgood at 9s lOld per yard was accepted for the supply, of a thousand, yards of Patutahi .metal.. The only tender received for tlie erection of a waiting room next to the Harbor Board office was that of Messrs Evans, Neild and Coy at £132, which was accepted. ‘Tlio secretary, was instructed to •make arrangements for disposing of .the Board’s tanks and plants at the Kbit it"spring, as the Board will not require to use the supply after the beginning of next year. It was reported that the har-bor-master’s oil-launch had not yet arrived, but it was decided that t-lie harbormaster' be empowered to employ Captain’Martin" at’ once as he would be of great service to him. Tho following statement of accounts was submitted —Ordinary account credit £10,829 4s lid. Harbor Improvement debit £8156 16s, balance £2672 8s lid. .Outstanding :\ Arrears of rates 1906 £541 4s 9d, do 1905 £219 4s Bd, wharfages current £3l 0s 3d, rent £49 11s. Bd.
