The Salvation Army band is now preparing for its usual concert, which will be held early next month. A meeting of tho Political Reform Leaguo, of which Mr. F. J. McLean is secretary, is to bo held at an early date, for the purpose of electing permanent officers.

A new block of buildings is to bo erected shortly in Gladstone road on tho site at present occupied by the N.Z, Clothing Factory, Messrs Millar and Craig, and Jowers. Messrs Hallanstoin and Co. are arranging for tlio re-building, and the new structure will bo two storeys, with 66ft frontage by 60ft jeep, .._ -rece-jitiy - in Gisborne on business connected with waterside workers’ conditions, met the members of the local union, and expressed surprise at the healthy and. vigorous state of the union. At an early date lilr. McLaren will visit Australia to investigate the conditions of labor af the waterside workers there.

Before his departure for YY’elling>ton Mr. David McLaren, secretary of the New Zealand YY’atorsid© YY’orkers’ Federation, stated that he had intended addressing the workers on general. labor matters, but that he was unable to do so on the present occasion. ‘He said, however, that ho would endeavor to pay Gisborne another visit in the near future, when he would give an address.

The Mayor will preside at the 21st anniversary tea, to bo held in the Salvation Army Barracks this evening. After the tea a musical programme will be gone through. Last night a number of tho performers put in a final rehearsal, and a good concent is promised. In addition to a varied selection of vocal items the band will play selections, and the programme will be added to by outside friends of the corps.

The Gisborne Drivers’ Union held their first monthly meeting last evening, when there was a good attendance of members. Three new members were elected, and several more have handed in their names for membership. Judging by the .interest shown the success of tho union is assured. A sub-committee was appointed to draw up demands, to be submitted to next monthly meeting of the union. When the demands aro approved they will be submitted to the eon-" plovers, and application will be made to the Arbitration Court for an award.

Yesterday morning the Roebuck Road bridge was formally taken over from the contractor. The bridge was inspected by the Mayor, Councillors Pettie, Miami, ' YVilliams, Whin ray and Bright, the Town clerk, the Borough Engineer and the County Engineer. .For the benefit of those present-tile drawbridge portion was lifted, everything working with great smoothness. The approaches of tire bridge have still to be completed, and ,i,t has been decided to postpone the opening ceremony for about- threo weeks, when it is hoped that this work will be completed.
