OCEAN MAIL SERVICE.
WELLING TON-SYDNEY SERVICE AGREED TO. Special to Times. WELLINGTON, Nov. 23. Further papers relating to the ocean mail services have been presented to Parliament. •Writing on July Ist last to the Union Steamship Company, the Secretary of the G.P.O. states that the Postmaster-General is prepared to consider the payment of a subsidy of £IO,OOO per annum without gratuities for a iveelily Friday steamer from Wellington to Sydney. . Replying on 6th July,.Mr. Holdsworth, general manager of the company, referred to the “arduous” and “expensive” nature of tho service. He stated that his company and the JTuddart-Parker Company would be prepared to give the service for the £IO,OOO subsidy, plus the ordinary gratuities for mails carried at present rates. Subsequently at an interview the Postmaster-General offered £15,000 per annum without gratuities, and this the companies concerned accejited, though it is understood that-there is to he no penalty in case of failure to connect.
