LONDON MARKETS. -pwfir4«(wmr-,c —l-m: -zS'.rj. — xjtjrs - Mercantile Agency Coy. from tho London agents, dated September 26 th:— WOOL. “The fifth series of London sales commenced on 24tli inst, the total quantity available being 91,000 bales. There was a large attendance from all quarters on'tlio opening day ,and notwithstanding the unrepresentative catalogues competition was general and active. The tone of tho market is very firm, values for merino as compared with July closing nates ruling 7-J to 10 per cent higher, the improvement being most marked oil well-grown sorts and faulty scoured. Fino crossbred is 5 per cent dearer, coarso greasy being very firm, while medium grades and slip© show little or no change. For scoured crossbred tho demand -is decidedly more active than in July, and values may be quoted 5 per cent higher, while greasy crossbred lambs, under the influence of keen competition on homo and French account-, niiark an appreciation mf 10 per' cent. There is but little bidding op American account. “The following opening dates for the wool sales in 1908 have-been fixed by. t.be. committee of. the colonial Wool-Mcr chants’ Association :—Jailua ry 21st, March-17th, May 12th, July 14th, September 29th, November 24th. For the first two sales no limit is fixed, and tlio limit .in tho other sales will be fixed -later. COCKSFOOT. “For the first part of tho period under ■ review tlio market was in .a very dull state, but. latterly tlicro has been an active demand qt ad-v-anciug iirices, and 68s por cwt c.i.thas been paid for bright 171 b-seed. It is anticipated in many quarters that very high prices will rule later on, and if so consignments arriving in time for tho spring demand next year should' sell to advantage. Wo quote: 171 b seed 68s,' 161 b seed 66s 6d per cwfc c.i.f.
EROZEN MEAT. t “Ah is usual at this time of the year, willi the commencement of the pork and rabbit season, sorno curtailment in the demand for mutton is to he expected, but for the period uiulei review'trade, in .frozen mutton has been exceptionally slow and all 'round have declined. Canterbury cannot bo quoted at lioro than 41d, North Island 3 a d, Australian 2’d, and 3d per lb, and River Plate 3d, -and 31 d per lb. Althoiigh tho demand forlambs continues to fall awlav, the fine weather ruling lately has somewhat checked the decline, and prices havo been fairly well maintained. Supplies ot chilled beef lmvo not been excessive, but the trade has been very indifferent, an,d while values of liindquartersare-about tho same as last quoted, fores Wave •tended in buyers’ favor. The market for New Zealand beef lias been unusually depressed, sales being most difficult to effect, particularly as regards secondary quality.”
