NEWCASTLE COLLERIES.
A STRIKE IMMINENT. United Press Association —Copyright SYDNEY. Nov. 8.
The position of tlie Newcastle district miners has reached an acute stage. At a meeting of -the Northern Miners’ ‘Committee of Management to-day. it was resolved: “That in view of tho attitude of tlie proprietors in locking out members o'f tlio Heblmrn, Bur-wooil, Laiinbton B, and Northumberland lodges, also their attitude -with -regard to other grievances, we as a committee recommend that until such disputes are settled we refuse to assist them to crush our fellow-men. We therefore refuse to continue working any longer under the circumstances.” It was further resolved : “That if the proprietors before Tuesday -reinstate the lockedout miners, and also agree -for an umpire to he appointed along with a committee of three from each side to settle tlio grievances, wo will recommend a continuance of -work.” Advices from Newcastle show that -following on the -refusal of t-lieir recent demand for increases, the closing of tho Burwood and Lambt-on pits lias aroused tlie resentment of the miners, anil if the proprietors are determined to starve the locked-out men into submission they were notgoing to assist tlie proprietors by providing strike funds. The proprietors express equal determination not to give way. A suggestion was made that the Premier or a Minister should intervene.
