The opening session of the Presbvterian General Assembly of N.Z. was held in St. John’s Church tonight. .About 250 delegates are at.tending the Assembly, which will sit for about a week. The retiring Moderator, Rev. B. Monro, of Reinnera, conducted the opening-part of the devotional exercises, and preached a sermon dealing main'ly with the duties of t-lie ministry. The retiring Moderator proposed the election of the Rev. Alexander Don, of Dunedin, ns his successor. He spoke of the large amount of work,.particularly correspondence, attached to the position, and expressed the hope that the time was not far distant when tlie Church would bo able to relieve the Moderator from all church work and allow him to engage in the public work of the church for the year following his election. . The election was carried unanimously. After the new Moderator had delivered his inaugural address it was decided that a message of sympathy he sent to' Mr. Sidey, of Napier, who was unable to attend owing to illness. Having agreed to the-stand-ing orders and appointed committees, the Assembly adjourned until -the morning.
