BOROUGH COUNCIL.

The fortnightly meeting of the Borough Council was held last night. Present: The Afayor (in tho chair), and Councillors Williams, Mann, Miller Bright, Wliinray, Somervell, Sawver, and Pettie. A number of carters petitioned the Council asking that since the water was available, public water troughs hf erected throughout the town at convenient jioints.—Referred to the AVorks Committee. Air. E. Wilkinson was granted permission to cut down fire bluegum trees in Roebuck road, providing the work is don-: to the satisfaction of the Engineer. Residents in Herbert road wrote asking Hat the footpath in the road be formed and lcerbed.-—The Engineer said tlio street was the worst one in the town. —The matter was referred to tile Engineer for a report by next meeting. Air. C. R. Neale wrote resigning liis position as manager of the abattoir, and stating that- tlio Department suggested that Air. Alooro be appointed to bis place.—Cr. AVliinray said it should be considered whether it would not be better to have tho inspector acting as manager.—A motion was passed accepting the resignation, and placing on record the appreciation of the Council for All - . Neale’s past services.—The matter of the new appointment was referred to a newly appoiutod Abattoir Committee consisting of Crs. Alaun, Aliller, and Bright. Air. J. Ollivier wrote objecting to giving up liis duties as overseer at tlio Roebuck road bridge, holding that be should be engaged until tlio completion of the contract,—Tho Engineer said that Air. Ollivier had been notified to cease his duties on November 11th, and that the whole work would he finished within a week aftcr t-hnt date.—The Engineer was authorised to retain Air. OUivior’s services for a further week if necessary.

Air. Thomas, Aberdeen rood, wrote stating that though lie was one. of the first to apply for connection with tlio water service the main had stopped about 200 yards from bis residence,Tlio Clerk stated that Air. Thomas bad got tlio usual connection: Tlio Engineer of tho Public AVorks Department wrote regarding the proposed installation of a 2-inch fire prevention service at the Post Office, and objecting to the installation of a motor. The big supply, lie. said, would only be used in case of fire, and a half-inch meter would check all the water actually used by the office.—lt was decided to grant the request at an annual fee of £l. The Finance Committee reported that after £ISOO had beeu expended this year tile Council would reach the limit of its overdraft. —Cr. Pettie said he understood that the Council had not intended to spend up to its overdraft.

Aii auctioneer's license was granted to Air. F. S. Alaleolm.

Cr. AVliinray moved that the metalling of Gladstone road be done with a view to future asphalting.—Cr. Aliller seconded.—Cr. Alann asked if the finances of the Borough would stand the expenditure.—Carried. The Afayor moved that tlio Council proclaim a public.holiday on Monday next to celebrate the King’s Birthday.—Carried.
