On Saturday tlio pupils of tho fifth and sixth standards of the Gisborne school held a picnic at Waibirere. The amended by-laws of the Harbor Board have been printed, and are now open to inspection at tho Board’s office. It has been decided to form a Garters’ Union in Gisborne, and a meeting is to be held next Monday to draw up rules and to elect officers. The Mayor, Sir. .1. Townley, lias been- advised that the. Giisbornt Harbor Bill passed through tho Local Bills Committee of the House of Representatives on Friday. Mr. J. C. Field returned from tho Palmerston show on Saturday. He purchased out of a class at the show a fine Romney ram,, one of three prize-winners. Tho animal was bred by Mr. Wheeler, of Feilding. It is reported that a syndicate is instituting inquiries with a view to establishing brick works in Gisborne. If successful, such an industry would be a great boon to the district. At the last practice of the Cook County Curious Coons tho programme for the first concert was gone through, and everything went with a fine swing. There will be a further practice this evening. A lull committee , meeting of tho Harbor Board will bo held this afternoon to consider amendments made to the Harbor Enabling Bill. It is understood that none of tlio amendments are vital to the measure.' The chairman of the Land Purchase Board, Mr. A. Barron, who was in town in connection with the To Arai compensation case, remains, in the district for some days for t.lie ; purpose of inspecting properties with; a view to their purchase. The latest phase of an alleged and mueh-talkcd-uf assault ease on a captain of one of the river boats is that .the latter has reported the matter to his emplovers, the Harbor Board, and that body has decided to thresh tho matter out in court. It appears that expenditure on the Pate me bridge has reached the limit up to which the County Council may ■borrow for the work, and no more money will be available in this way until tlie end of March next. It is hoped, however, to make arrangements to have the work carried oil as usual.
