(Special to Times). CHRISTCHURCH, Oct. 31. Most of tho horses claiming engagements on the first day of the Canterbury J.C. spring meeting were given their final gallops this morning, as to-morrow they will probably be restricted to easy pacing and short sprints. Master Del-aval easily beat Maliuta over one mile and a quarter in 2min lisec. Tho Aucklander travelled well and finished strongly, but his companion was rather disappointing. Lapland was fully extended over a mile and a quarter, which occupied 2m,iii 16 4-ssec. Buccleucli’s time for a similar journey was a second longer. He did not travel fast over the first two furlongs, and Hie manner in which he finished was not impressive. Elevation, Zimmerman, and Astrakhan were associated ever a. mile and a half. They ran iu company till half way down the straight, where Astrakhan was east'!.; off, the other pair finishing together. Zimmerman was fully extended, hut Elevation appeared to have something reserved, and was probably carrying over his Cup weight. His was much the better effort. The time for the full distance was 2min 43sec, the last mile and a quarter occupying 2m.in 16-tsec. Paritutu, Grand Slam, Gazeley, and Maniapoto were the next to work, their task being a mile and a quarter. The first-nam-ed pair set out at a solid pace, but at the end of six furlongs Maninpoto, who lost some ground at the start, ran up to them. In the run homo Paritutu just heat Grand Slam, with Maniapoto a length away. Gazeley dropped back soon •after entering tho stiviigjht and finished a long way behind. I understand lie overreached, and some doubts are expressed regarding his being able to race ou Saturday. The •time for tho gallop was 2mm 14 3-5 sec, and as they were all doing about their best it was not an impressive performance. .Probable easily beat Armistice over a mile and a quarter. Tlio time was slow —2min ISsec—tout Probable .was under a pull most of the wn.v. Apa, Frisco, and St. Joe took 2min 13 3~ssec over ■a mile and a quarter. Frisco finished in front, and liis pleasing performance gained him many admir-
Gold Crest was too good for All Reel over six furlongs, which occupied lmin 16 3-ssec. . Gold Crest has galloped very consistently since his arrival, and he looks like being very dangerous whenever he starts. Fire Iron went attractively over five furlongs, and Ballarat, who looks ill rare fettle, dashed over half a- mile in. good style. Bonny Glen appeared to move freely enough in a. circuit at three-quarter pace, hut lie is still showing signs of soreness. Glenculloeh is still causing Ills connections somo anxiety. The fore foot which ho bruised last Saturday js far from right yet. Martello remains in the same unsatisfactory condition, and lie is now regarded as a very ’ doubtful starter for the Stewards’ Handicap. Another candidate for the sprint race in King Billy performed poorly >his morning, and in his case also 1 understand there is reason to suspect a screw being loose somewhere. The betting market on the double is as active as ever. Among Cup candidates Master Dolaval holds his place as favorite, but Elevation has gained favor, and is a strong second choice. For the Stewards’ Handicap tlic chief run to-day bis been on Lord S'oult and Contender, both of whom have been spiritedly supported.
